Freight House Refurbishment

REFURBISHMENT works at Freight House, Rochford, are set to get underway as Rochford District Council moves forward with a major investment in the building’s future.
The programme of works will include repairs and improvements to the roof, replacement of the existing heating system, upgrades to hot and cold-water services, electrical and lighting improvements, installation of a new Building Management System, fire safety and compliance works, improvements to kitchens, toilets and accessibility, and a range of internal and external repairs.
The contractor will initially establish a secure working area on site, including welfare facilities and material storage. During the works, residents, businesses and users of the Freight House car park may notice contractor vehicles, deliveries and some construction noise.
There may also be temporary impacts on access and parking arrangements at certain stages of the project. Deliveries and site access will be carefully managed, with measures in place to minimise disruption and keep surrounding routes clear wherever possible.
Subject to any unforeseen issues, the works are expected to be completed by the end of September 2026.
Coun Adi Malviya, Leader of Rochford District Council, said: “I’ve recently said that modernising council-owned assets, like these works at the Freight House, will bring us closer to achieving our goal of fully utilising council buildings for the benefit of our residents and the local area.
“This investment will ensure the building is fit for purpose and ready for future operators, supporting the Council’s work to secure a sustainable long-term future for the site. It will also help reduce the ongoing maintenance costs currently being incurred by the Council while ensuring the building is in the best possible condition to support future occupiers whose activities can deliver benefits to residents and the wider community.”
