A TEN-MILE walk along the Southend coastline has raised £900 towards a £3,000 fundraising target aimed at giving more local children and young people access to music.
Supporters of The Song School took on the Estuary Walk, travelling from Leigh station to East Beach as part of the organisation’s Summer of Music programme.
The programme is being supported by c2c, continuing a long-running relationship between the railway operator and The Song School.
The walk has now raised £900 towards the school’s £3,000 fundraising target, with more activities continuing through the summer. For the walkers, the challenge was ten miles along the estuary. For the young people who benefit from The Song School Fund, the impact can be much bigger.
The Fund provides free and subsidised places on regular music sessions and holiday workshops for young people from low-income households. It also supports neurodivergent children and young people through re-imagined approaches to music education and helps pay for instrument and studio upkeep, including a sensory garden currently under construction.
If the overall £3,000 target is reached, the money will fund 15 supported places on The Song School’s regular timetable for a full year.
Rob Mullen, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer for GBR Anglia, said: “We are so excited to be sponsoring The Song School’s Estuary Walk once again this year.
“The funds that the Estuary Walk raises make such a big difference to this amazing organisation.”
He said the partnership between c2c and The Song School, which has developed over several years, was one the railway operator was “very proud” of.
But the walkers haven’t finished the job yet, and neither has the Summer of Music.
The fundraising campaign continues with The Song School’s Big Busk [https://leigh-on-sea.news/a-chance-to-shine/], inviting musicians of all ages and abilities to perform and raise money.
Supporters can also take on their own fundraising challenges, with everything from sponsored runs and walks to bake sales welcomed.
