RAYLEIGH and Wickford MP, Mark Francois, spoke in opposition to the Labour Government’s Troubles Bill in the House of Commons.
Mr Francois, who is also the Shadow Armed Forces and Veterans Minister, has been vocal in his opposition to Labour’s Troubles Bill, which he fears, if it ever gained Royal Assent, would reopen Army Veterans, who served in Northern Ireland, to an almost endless cycle of investigation and reinvestigation, often at the hands of Sinn Fein.
Speaking during the debate in the Commons, Mr Francois said: “I believe that had it not been for those British troops who served on ‘Operation Banner’, as it was known – the longest running single operation in the history of the British Army – and fought the terrorists to a standstill, there would never have been any Good Friday Peace Agreement in Northern Ireland, in the first place.”
Shortly after the debate, Mr Francois added: “The Conservatives motto throughout this campaign has been to ‘Defend those who Defended Us’ and that is what we shall continue to do, as the Bill now moves to the House of Lords.”
