CONSTRUCTION is underway at a development of flats on a prominent section of Leigh Broadway.
The site, opposite the recently renovated Grand Hotel, previously housed Leigh car wash and the former Grove Fittings Ironmongery store.
Now the location will be used for the development of 15 new flats, work was seen getting underway with workmen laying foundations for the three-storey building.
When completed, the site will boast seven one-bed flats, seven two-beds and one three-bed flat, along with off street parking for 17 vehicles.
It will also integrate a ground floor commercial unit, for which it is understood, developers are in advanced negotiations with a “big high street name” to fill it.
The property developers SJT Developments, who are behind the project, are reported as saying: “The proposed development will make an important contribution to the rejuvenation of the current site and immediate surrounding area.
“The contemporary high-quality design will enhance the appearance of the street-scenes and identity of the local area.”
The flats are the latest is a plethora of transformations, including the landmark Grand Hotel, and a number of new restaurants in Leigh.
That same section of Leigh Broadway saw another old store demolished, on the corner of Maple Avenue, to a make way for flats and a restaurant, and recent plans have also been submitted for a new glass-fronted restaurant on the same stretch of road, on land known colloquially as Moon Corner.
Leigh Lid Dem Councillor Peter Wexham voiced concerns that the section of Leigh Broadway was being overdeveloped.
He said: “The developers for these latest flats have had planning permission for years.
“But with this, and the old Overton building as well, my concern is that the whole area is going to end up like a wind tunnel, like Victoria Avenue in Southend is.
“Every bit of space is being built up on.”
