A WOMAN died as a result of a fatal house fire in Leigh.
Firefighters were called to a house in Mountdale Gardens, during the early hours of Wednesday, March 29.
When crews from Leigh, Southend and Rayleigh arrived at the scene at around 2:15am, they found a fire on the ground floor of a mid-terraced house.
After evacuating neighbours from either side of the home, firefighters worked to stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring properties.
The fire was extinguished by 4 am.
Sadly, the woman, who had not been named at the time of writing, died at the scene, Essex Fire confirmed.
An investigation carried out to determine the cause of the fire found it was started accidentally due to a fault in an electric consumer unit.
Independent councillor Keith Evans of Blenheim Ward, in which the house is located, said: “It is always incredibly sad to hear of these tragic circumstances.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and family of the woman at this difficult time.”
A spokesperson for Essex Police added: “We were called to a fire at a house in Mountdale Gardens, Leigh shortly after 2.15am today.
“Sadly, a woman found inside had died.
“Essex County Fire and Rescue Service will carry out an investigation into the cause of the fire, but we are not currently treating the woman’s death as suspicious.”
