A RESIDENTS group in Chalkwell are celebrating the return of a working streetlamp, after being in the dark for three years.

Back in 2020, members of Chalkwell Ward Residents Association (CWRA) campaigned to have a faulty streetlight mended on Crowstone Bridge, which crosses the railway between Crowstone Road and Crowstone Avenue.

In a story covered in The Leigh Times in 2022, the group are now happy to report that the light has finally been fixed, with the assistance of Coun James Courtenay of Chalkwell Ward.

Jane, a member of the CWRA, said: “After another year of effort on the part of Coun James Courtenay, supported by CWRA, we can finally report success.

“It is more than three years since the bulb stopped working, as the simple matter of changing a light-bulb turned out to be not so simple.

“The unbelievable delay in changing a bulb was a result of the fact that the switch for the power source was on land owned by Network Rail, while the light itself is on council land.

“The switch has now been moved onto council land to ensure that future bulb changes will be the straightforward matter they ought to be.”

Coun Courtenay commented: “Delighted that I’ve finally managed to get it fixed, and a big thank you for the Chalkwell Ward Residents’ Association’s help with keeping the pressure up on the Council to ensure it was never off the to do list.”
Jane added: “Our congratulations to Coun Courtenay for his unstinting efforts to get this to happen.”
