A LEIGH councillor is leading a campaign to improve what she calls the continued dangerous and shocking state of Leigh Cliffs East.

Coun Carol Lambert, Town Councillor for St Clement’s Ward, is concerned and disappointed about the state of the cliffs near the Belvedere and surrounding walkways.

She said: “This was a very popular place for people to walk their dogs, unwind and sit and enjoy the wonderful views.”

Her main concern are the abandoned works that are strewn all over the Cliffs, leaving mess and disturbed ground in its wake.

She added: “Sadly the abandoned works have left the Cliffs in a terrible state, swathes of digging have been abandoned and rubbish is strewn everywhere.

“Local residents are horrified by the mess left behind, including Friends of Love Leigh Cliffs who had to stop their hard work as no notice of any works was provided and even now no one knows what works were being done.

“I am very aware of the badger issues; however, this has been going on for at least the last 3 years which has left plenty of opportunity to “move them on.”

“The Belvedere and the continual desecration of the historic stones continues unabated and is still a magnet for anti-social behaviour.”

A walk around the area with Coun Craig Watt also revealed specific points where the ground was full of holes and cracks.

Taking a walk in the area and noticing many unstable areas and holes in the ground, she said: “We had a walk around the cliffs on Sunday June 4 and realised that the Cliffs have been left in a dangerous state; the previous contractors carved chunks out of some areas at the bottom of the cliffs and dug holes, which have just been left.

“This has left the cliffs in a dangerous state as it means the top is far more likely to slip, particularly if or when there is heavy rain.

“There are also huge cracks across and down the cliffs, which are not easy to see due to the length of
the grass and plants.”

This was reported to the City Council and an urgent inspection took place on Tuesday, June 5, followed by the arrival of a digger to conduct repairs.

Coun Lambert added she was pleased the council were finally addressing the problem: “I understand urgent work is going to be done very quickly and a digger, toilets, cones etc are now on site.”

She is nonetheless very concerned about the state of the cliffs, and the danger wider damage represents: “Many residents are concerned about the area and quite rightly so; this area is looking very unstable and I believe residents need to be aware of this,” she added.
