THE MP for Southend West celebrated the work of charities in Parliament’s Small Charities National Week, which ran from June 19 to the 23.

The event celebrated local businesses who support the community by fuelling local growth, as well as creating spaces of tourist interest, which is largely the case in Southend.

A spokesperson said: “During the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, small charities have been the lifeblood of communities in England.

Small Charity Week is a chance to say thank you, and also raise awareness of the importance of supporting local charities through donations, fundraising and volunteering.”

An example of a local small business is Angus Browne, best known for Brownes Bootcamp, new business venture Brownes Thames Estuary Boat & Fishing Trips.

While not a small business, Mrs Firth invited local business owner Philip Miller MBE to Parliament on the day to speak with Jeremy Hunt about local business rates and corporate taxation.

He spoke for all businesses in Southend when he called for ‘loosening of the screws’ to allow businesses in Southend to flourish in the approaching summer, tourist months.

Ms Firth said: “I am so grateful to the small and local charities across my constituency who work tirelessly for local communities.

“Small Charity Week is a chance to say thank you and it’s also an important time to remind people to support their local charity by offering donations, volunteering time, or help with fundraising.”
