AN application has been submitted to Southend Council outlining plans to convert Westcliff’s Cliff pub into flats.
Under the plans, the ground floor would be changed from a pub into two flats, one with one bedroom and the other with two.
A new two-storey mews house would also be created and the existing manager’s flat would be turned into a private home. Plans submitted to the council show the original signs would be retained, as would the stained glass windows. The plans show a new sign would also be put up with the wording “48 The Hamlet, formerly The Cliff Freehouse.” The change is not expected for a number of years.
The Cliff has been a serving those in the LGBTQ+ community for more than 50 years. Reacting to the proposal, Blenheim Park ward Labour Councillor Laurie Burton said: “Across the country, LGBT venues are disappearing at an alarming rate.
“The Cliff has a vibrant history and is always such a friendly, welcoming environment, to close it would be a huge loss to the city.”
Bosses at the Cliff declined to provide details of the plans, or a timescale. Southend Council will have the final say and are expected to rule on the plans by the end of July. The plans can be viewed on the Southend Council website.
