Crews were called to a grass fire covering an area of 30m in Oakwood Park in Leigh at lunchtime on Friday, July 7.
Essex Fire and Rescue Service believe the fire was an act of arson.
Paul Collins, Liberal Democrats councillor responsible for the Eastwood Park ward, said: “It is reckless and is putting people at risk, both lives and properties.
“It was during the afternoon, so I know there would have been people around. So, I urge anyone who was in the park and saw this to get in touch with the fire service.
“I am pleased the fire brigade managed to respond quickly. I know the residents were very frightened. I had been in touch with a few of the houses there, whose owners had hoses out making sure it didn’t reach them.
“It is horrible for anyone to be in that situation and we need to take some lessons from this, especially when it comes to cutting long grass while it is hot and dry.”
A spokesman for Essex Fire commented: “Firefighters were called to a grass fire in Oakwood Park in Leigh at lunchtime on Friday, July 7.
“The fire crews reported an area of 30m of grass was on fire.
“Firefighters believe the fire was started deliberately.
“Every deliberate fire has victims, costs, and consequences, and we need your help to stop these reckless fires.
“While our firefighters were tied up dealing with this fire, they were not available to respond if they were needed for life-threatening emergency like house fires and road traffic collisions.
“Anyone with information about any deliberate fires should immediately report it to FireStoppers, who are an independent charity run by CrimeStoppers.”
