Merchant Navy Day – THE Reg Ensign flag was raised in Old Leigh to mark Merchant Navy Day.

THE Red Ensign flag was raised in Old Leigh to mark Merchant Navy Day.

The flag was hoisted on Strand Wharf in the company of The Mayor of Southend, and Southend West MP Anna Firth on September 3.

Merchant Navy Day honours and remember the sacrifices of the often forgotten and invisible, but very hard-working, Merchant Navy seafarers.

A spokesperson from The Seafarer’s Charity explained: “The Fly the Red Ensign on Merchant Navy Day campaign was started in 2015 to address ‘sea blindness’ that appeared to afflict a huge proportion of the population, with widespread public ignorance about the UK’s ongoing dependence on merchant seafarers who are responsible for shipping over 95% of the UK’s trade.”

Anna Firth MP said: “It was such an honour to raise the flag for Merchant Navy Day alongside The Mayor of Southend, councillors and local veterans.

“As a city built on seaside infrastructure, it is vital that we remember the often invisible work of our merchant seafarers.”
