AN antenna that was installed behind Leigh’s Broadway led to concerns for some residents, who believed it was a 5G mast.
A number of residents logged fears about the appearance of the structure on Ashleigh Drive, which some believed to be a 5G mast.
One concerned resident, Lara Lawson, who had friends and family that work in the area, reported fears over the reported effects of ‘Non-Ionizing Radiation’ through which 5G mast’s works.
However, it was later shown that the mast was not a 5G mast, but a phone antenna.
Richard Longstaff, Green Party member for Leigh explained: “The phone antenna on the buildings in Ashleigh Drive are not 5G.
“5G masts are taller, not close to houses and above the tree canopy with a different cylindrical type antenna.”
Despite the structure not being a 5G mast, it is a frequent occurrence that health risks are spoken of in relation to their erection.
A Leigh scientist commented on the perceived threats of 5G masts in relation to non-ionising radiation: “People reading the word ‘radiation’ immediately fear the worst.
“This is wrong. There are two basic types: Non-Ionising radiation, which is a much lower frequency and longer wavelength into the infrared.
“Essentially one side of our visible spectrum is lower energy and no health risk – which is how 5G operates – and the other side is higher energy and unhealthy.”
