Guide Dogs Support

THE MP for Southend West reiterated her support for people with vision impairment at the recent Conservative Party Conference.

 Anna Firth MP learned about the problems pavement parking and street clutter cause for people with sight loss when meeting the charity Guide Dogs.

Ms Firth discussed the main barriers preventing people with sight loss from walking the streets safely, and in some cases can force people onto the road.

Eleanor Briggs, Head of Policy, Public Affairs and Campaigns at Guide Dogs added: “Parking on pavements is a nuisance for everyone, but potentially dangerous if you are a wheelchair user forced onto the road, pushing a child in a buggy or have sight loss and can’t see traffic coming towards you.

“This daily threat can mean people can’t safely get to work, education or to see friends. This is why we’re calling for a law that would empower local councils to tackle this problem.”

Since becoming elected, Ms Firth has been a stalwart campaigner for people with visual impairment including for Jill Allen-King OBE, a well-known Westcliff resident who uses a guide dog.

She said: “I have – and will continue to – campaign for Jill Allen-King OBE to receive a new guide dog after her dog Jagger was forced to retire, and I am very proud of everything Guide Dogs do to support those in need.

“I receive regular correspondence from members of the local community expressing their support, and I was very pleased to bring these concerns directly to Guide Dogs last weekend.”
