A NOVEL school road safety scheme is set to be made permanent after a majority backed it.
Southend Council carried out a consultation on its first School Street scheme at West Leigh Schools in Leigh.
The experimental scheme prevents vehicles from using the roads during the schools during drop off and pick up times.
The Your Say Southend consultation found 86 per cent of 244 respondents supported the implementation of scheme at West Leigh School Street permanently. There were just five objectors.
Kevin Buck, councillor responsible for highways, transport and parking, said: “We’re happy to support schemes where there is majority support from the parents and the school is supportive of them.
“That’s clearly the case with this one, so we’re very happy to support them.”
The first tranche of funding was announced by the Secretary of State for Transport in May 2020 as part of the work to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. The initial grant funding supported local transport authorities with providing cycling and walking facilities.
As part of this initiative the School Streets pilot schemes were introduced to four schools in the city, Greenways, North Street, West Leigh and Bournes Green.
The experimental scheme lasted 18 months and this allowed the scheme to be monitored and any comments made and considered during the first 6 months in operation.
