Leigh On Sea News. Protest Against Politics – LEIGH Town Council’s (LTC) Coun Alan Hart has staged a one man protest outside Leigh Community Centre, dressed as a ‘demon’ and with a sign reading ‘Leigh Town Council needs politics like it needs a hole in the head.’

Coun Hart was collecting signatures and protesting, he said, against: “The lack of democracy existent on the Council.”

In a statement Coun Hart added: “It may be well known that when LTC was formed nearly thirty years ago at the behest of residents, it was and remained until recently entirely made up of independent Councillors. Some may have had party allegiance elsewhere, but that never came into the Council Chamber.

“May 2023 arrived with full elections for LTC, all sixteen being due for re-election and re-affirmation by public vote. Unfortunately nine seats were uncontested and several previous Councillors chose not to stand again. Four more who did stand were defeated and three independents were reinstated. To sum up, thirteen Councillors are declared party members and three remain non-aligned.

“Party meetings are allowed outside Council in order to pre-empt decisions, complaints against Councillor actions are dealt with by Councillors and Councillors cannot be removed for anti-social behaviour! Democracy has left the building!

“Nothing supernatural, the demon however represents the darker side of politics as opposed to public service.  Maybe some party incumbents would consider ‘crossing the floor’ into independence in honour of those whose inspiration created this valuable tier of local administration?

“The demon moves on!”
