ESSEX County Council intends to make the booking system a permanent fixture at recycling centres, in a decision that has elicited strong criticism from disgruntled residents and a Southend councillor.
The council initiated a consultation following a successful seven-month trial of the booking system, citing its effectiveness in managing peak times, reducing congestion, and preventing misuse by commercial vehicles.
Essex County Council operates a number of recycling centres including in Rayleigh, while Southend Council manages its own recycling centres.
Previously, Southend Labour councillor Lydia Hyde expressed concerns about the mounting issues of dumped waste in Southend, emphasising that the city was grappling with fly-tipping problems stemming from Rochford residents frustrated with the system.
Similar apprehensions have been voiced throughout the county regarding the rise in fly-tipping incidents.
A spokesperson for Essex County Council emphasised: “Fly-tipping is never justified and constitutes a criminal offense that can lead to prosecution.
“We have not received reports of residents encountering difficulties in securing booking slots at our recycling centres, and our data indicates availability both on weekdays and weekends.”
The council also underlined its unwavering commitment to collaborating with local councils, the Environment Agency, and other enforcement agencies in Essex to ensure appropriate investigations and actions are taken against those who engage in fly-tipping.
