ANNA Firth, MP for Southend West, visited the fracture clinic in Southend Hospital, which will launch a new Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) in Spring 2024, with the support of the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board.
Over five years the new FLS is expected to help prevent 550 fractures as well as saving the Trust £472,000 and 1,301 bed days each year.
In mid and south Essex there are an estimated 8,000-10,00 fragility fractures each year in adults aged 50 years and over, causing patients to often spend extended periods of time in hospital after a fracture, taking up hospital beds and staff time.
The Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) will see those who have suffered an unexpected fracture, find out why the fracture was caused, and intervene to prevent further fractures.
Patients are assessed for osteoporosis and, where appropriate, are given lifestyle advice and started on bone protection.
Focusing efforts on fracture prevention drastically saves hospital resources; for every £1 spent on FLS, £3.26 is saved by the NHS. The new FLS will save local authorities £420,000 and save primary care £23,000.
Ms firth said: “I’m delighted that this is the first fracture liaison service in the UK to have a single FLS across an area, supporting consistent care across mid and south Essex.
“This will greatly contribute to my mission to make Southend West a safer, healthier and wealthier place for its residents.”
