Sir David Tribute - A LIFE-SIZED bronze statue paying tribute to Southend's champion, Sir David Amess, is on the brink of becoming a reality.

A LIFE-SIZED bronze statue paying tribute to Southend’s champion, Sir David Amess, is on the brink of becoming a reality.

Sculptor Andrew Lilley, aged 70, has been working on the statue for a year, in a project that received a significant boost thanks to a generous contribution of £48,000 from Basildon’s affluent entrepreneur, Dr. Vijay Patel.

This sum was raised through a dedicated fundraising campaign, led by Anna Firth, who acceded the role of Southend West MP from Sir David after his murder in October 2021.

Ms Firth made a visit to see the clay form of the commemorative statue alongside Derek Jarvis, Southend Conservative councillor responsible for arts, culture, heritage and leisure.

The pair met Mr Lilley at his High Wycombe studio.

Ms Firth said: “I was delighted to visit the statue of Sir David, which has been given such a beautiful and lifelike rendering by Andrew Lilley.”

Mr Lilley commented: “I’m always really pleased to see something coming to fruition and am thrilled with all the generous donations in making the project a reality.

“A location has not been determined as of yet, but it’s hoped to be unveiled on March 26 next year – Sir David’s birthday.

“Yesterday, I heard from his daughter Katie and his wife Lady Julia, and they fully approve in casting it in bronze.

“With their approval, foundry Milwyn Casting, based in east Molesey, Surrey, will now come and make moulds and cast it in bronze.”

The papers that Sir David can be see carrying say ‘Southend for City Status’ – a nod to the campaign he was involved with at the time of his death.

Southend’s city status was confirmed just three days after his tragic murder.

Ms Firth added: “The detail of Sir David holding Southend’s bid for city status is hugely touching, and I’m incredibly proud to have secured the amount required for its instalment and completion.”
