A LOCAL group of volunteers are transforming areas of Westcliff into lively “pocket parks.”
Grassroots Westcliff is a volunteer-led initiative on a mission to beautify Westcliff and make the most of its charm and unusual places, for the benefit of the community.
Their work sees them pick overlooked spots and transform them into green spaces, called “pocket parks”.
One site completed includes a spot on the north side of Westcliff Station, and includes raised flower beds, colour coordination and plants to encourage biodiversity.
A Westcliff resident commented: “I was delighted when I saw Grassroots’ work at the station, it is truly wonderful.”
Now, with the support of Southend Council Parks department, they have transformed an area opposite the Trading Rooms pub on London Road, into another Pocket Park.
Grassroots Westcliff chairperson, Alan Hardiman, 39, explained the community spirit behind these pocket parks.
“It takes a village!
“The idea for this pocket park was never ‘just’ about planting a few pretty planters (though beautiful they are), it was firstly about making a statement and sending a signal that people do care about this area, which is why we chose this high footfall location with around 600 passers-by each day.
“It is about boosting community spirit, which there is no doubt we achieved.
“My favourite thing about the experience was watching people connect with each other having not met before.”
Grassroots Westcliff have eight more project planned for this year.
Resident are encouraged to come and help on designated Saturdays, information about which, can be found on their Facebook page at: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100091805679801
