Labour’s Waste Plan

SOUTHEND Labour Councillors have announced their intention to bring in a free bulky waste collection policy as part of the new waste collection contract, if they win the local elections in May.

Councillors and residents have raised concerns about the Conservatives plans to scrap weekly bin collections in Southend from April next year, saying the move could see fly-tipping increase in Southend.

Announcing this policy, the Labour Group have issued a statement saying they have: “zero confidence in the Tory administration to deliver a sensible waste collection contract.

“The Tories have been wholly unable to satisfy the concerns Labour has raised on behalf of residents about how bins will be collected under the new Conservative regime of once every fortnight.”

Coun Daniel Cowan, Leader of the Labour Group, said “I am delighted to be announcing this policy as a sensible, pragmatic tool to help reduce fly-tipping in our city.

“Labour wants to build a city we can be proud of, and that means keeping our communities as free from fly-tipping as possible. The Tories broke their promise to keep weekly bin collections and we have real concerns that their half-baked plans will see fly-tipping increase.

“Labour has a real plan to reduce fly-tipping and this is one part of that.”

Coun Lydia Hyde, Shadow Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate, and Waste said: “Free bulky waste collection will be a vital tool in our efforts to make Southend cleaner and greener.

“This model works well for many councils across the country, including our neighbours over the estuary in Medway. This is just the start and the next Labour administration will make it easier to dispose of waste, so there will be no excuse for dumping on our streets and we’ll back this up with tougher enforcement on those who break the rules.”
