A YOUNG man from Westcliff was tragically killed in a car accident whilst backpacking in New Zealand, leaving his family totally devastated.
Tributes have been paid for Joseph Snode, who has been described as caring son brother and boyfriend following the tragic accident on January 28.
The 26-year-old arrived in New Zealand in January, a place that was special to his family being Lord of the Rings fans.
Mr Snode had worked hard for four years to save up for this adventure of a lifetime, setting off to travel the world back in September 2023.
In this stime, he visited Japan, China, South Korea, Philippines, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand before his tragic death.
Mr Snode grew up in Westcliff and attended Belfairs Academy in Leigh.
He then studied at university and graduated with a first-class Honours Degree.
His mother Elaine Snode said: “Joseph was such a caring man, never judged people, and accepted everyone as they were.
“He was all about enjoying and experiencing life to the full.
“Nothing can express the pain and despair that is being felt by his family and friends all over the world.
“Joseph had so many plans for his future and he was literally living his dream life before it was taken from him.
“Each day is a struggle to get going and there are memories of Joseph everywhere.
“I don’t understand how life goes on when you lose a child.”
A Go Fund me page has been set up, after friends asked to contribute to Mr Snode’s funeral and memorial cots.
His mother continued: “Joseph’s insurance covers his repatriation, but doesn’t cover any funeral or memorial costs.
“We thought long and hard about doing the page, but we have been approached by people wanting to help with these costs and that is the reason for this page.
“Joseph was one in a billion and we are helped by hearing all the wonderful stories and seeing the photos his many friends around the world are sharing with us.
“Hearing from his friends is one thing that is keeping us going.
“Joseph was so full of life and love for living that we want that to continue through all he knew.”
