THE daughter of a Leigh artist is showcasing his locally-inspired work through a spring exhibition.

Sam Lydon’s father Howard Robinson was a well-known Leigh painter, who had a popular shop and studio called Gallery 3 on Leigham Court Road for over 20 years.

He sadly passed away two years ago, but since then, Sam has been reproducing some of his art most favourite scenes and selling them as prints and mugs at local craft fayres.

Ms Lydon said: “I started selling the prints at the Billet Christmas fair and at the Community Centre fair. It’s getting a really good local response, and it is nice to create a legacy of his life and work in this way.”

Now, an exhibition of his colourful work will open at Leigh Community Centre on March 1, as a celebration of his work.

Ms Lydon says: “I was approached about hanging his pictures at the community centre. I would love people to still see his work.”

It is hoped the exhibition will both remind resident of his unique take on the local estuary and scenery, and also introduce his art to a new generation.

She adds: “My father was well known for doing his pictures of the Thames Estuary with the chimneys, which of course now have been blown up.”

Ms Lydon commented that it’s been wonderful exposing a new generation of art lovers to her father’s paintings.

“It’s really nice to see people who didn’t know his work before now enjoying it.”

The exhibition at the café Cup of Leigh in the Leigh Community Centre will be up for the month of March, and will feature a range of original paintings and prints.

Ms Lydon adds: “My father was a big supporter of The Leigh Community Centre, and would never want it to close, so it feels appropriate doing an exhibition of his work here.”

Ms Lydon has an Instagram page featuring the prints, @HowardRobinsonArt.
