LEIGH’s Two Tree Gallery is showcasing the work of Westcliff-based printmaker Sophie Sleigh-Johnson for an Easter exhibition in the guest artist slot.

Ms Sleigh-Johnson’s prints combine hard ground and aquatint etching alongside lino printing, in work that corals alchemical emblems with trans-temporal depictions of the Thames Estuary.

The work embodies the ancient and modern methods of print making with contemporary and humour-inflected research into the locale: “think alchemic diagrams of the marsh’s prima materia for the algorithm generation.”

The centre piece of the exhibition will be a large copper-print etching of a map of Essex, alongside etching allegories of text and landscape.

The lino prints are put to use as both a pub mirror design, and posters for previous performance events initiated by the artist pertaining to the mercurial culture and geology of the Essex marshes, and the magical histories of the Running Well in Wickford.

These posters are, equally, a nod to radical printmaking traditions – from the woodblock tableaux of Civil War pamphleteers to the journals of The Situationists.

The private view will be held between 5.30 and 7.30pm on Easter Saturday, March 30.

Two Tree Gallery at 3 Rectory Grove is open to the public every Saturday, from 11 am to 4 pm.

The works will be up in the window and in the gallery until Friday, April 26.
