Oak’s Sad Fate

A LEIGH oak tree, estimated to have stood for “at least 175 years,” faces the sad fate of being chopped down due to alleged poisoning, an independent councillor has claimed.

Situated on the periphery of Belfairs Park Woods, the tree’s demise has left Southend Council with no alternative but to authorise its felling, according to Coun Stephen Aylen.

He asserts that poison was deliberately poured into a drilled hole in the tree, a majestic presence he believes has graced the landscape for nearly two centuries.

The councillor voiced concern over this act of vandalism and the loss of such a significant natural landmark, reportedly saying: “It’s made me question why anyone would do that.

“It is so sad, especially as this particular tree stands sort of on its own. It’s a real shame this has happened to it.

“The council has tried to rescue it, but it’s too far gone. The tree is going to be felled because it could endanger houses or people.”

According to Coun Aylen, this is not even the first instance of tree vandalism: “We’ve seen copper nails put into trees before, especially on the edge of the golf course, but I’ve never seen or heard of anyone drilling a hole in it and putting poison in,” he added.
