Leigh On Sea News: Silent Protest – LEIGH residents advocating for change staged a silent protest at a recent Leigh Town Council meeting, brandishing banners with calls for nine Tory town councillors to resign.
A number of protesters held up signs bearing messages such as “resign” and “slow hand clap”, following accusations of intimidating behaviour in previous encounters.
During the meeting, Bernard Arscott, Town Council Chairman, assumed the role of “proper officer.”
Coun Arscott asserts that this measure is intended to prevent overspending until a replacement town clerk is appointed.
He also disputed the attendance figures, noting a more positive atmosphere compared to previous meetings.
He said: “The atmosphere was far better than previous meetings.
“A number of questions were asked, and answers were provided, whether those wanted to hear those answer is another matter. But behaviour was much better than before.”
The campaign stems from concerns about the governance of the town council, particularly focusing on nine Tory councillors elected unopposed during the 2023 election.
Demands for their resignation coincide with calls for clarity regarding staff suspensions and the future of Leigh Community Centre.
