OLD Leigh will come alive with traditional sound this May as the next shanty festival returns to the Old Town.
A traditional sea shanty is a type of work song that originated among sailors and seafarers during the age of sail, particularly during the 19th century.
Crowds are expected across Old Leigh the weekend, on May 18 and 19 as this popular event returns.
An array of musicians from the UK, Ireland, and Holland will serenade attendees with their sea shanty melodies against the picturesque backdrop of the Old Town.
One of the key local set of performers will be The Hoy Shanty Crew, who have performed “raw and rousing renditions” of traditional shanties and local songs since 2014.
The festival’s main stage will be stationed on Strand Wharf, while additional events will unfold over two days at venues including the Mayflower, the Old Smack, the Boatyard Restaurant, The Peter Boat, the Crooked Billet, and No 1 Cockleshed.
The weekend will also feature a charity collection in support of the Southend RNLI, Leigh Lions Club, and Leigh Endeavour Trust, the latter another key part of the Old Town.
The community event is free to attendees and is being sponsored by Priority Management to celebrate their 35 years serving the community.
