IT is the end of an era for an iconic Leigh health food shop as it goes on the market.
Greens Health Foods, in Rectory Grove, was established in 1963, and is one of the longest standing businesses in the town.
Greens broke the mould 43 years ago, becoming the first indent heath food store in the area.
Since that time, it has become a by-word of friendly service, expert product knowledge, and community shopping, providing health foods, supplements and an Aladdin’s Cave of associated products for over six decades.
Owner Richard Green, who has been at the store for 43 years, is turning 60, and feels it is time to pass the business on to a younger generation.
Mr Green took over the business from his father, but also worked there as a child.
He said: “We started life as one of three businesses with a beer and wine shop, but times change, we developed into a health food store and have gone from strength to strength.
“I’m happy to stay here, but I think we need brighter, younger mind who can take Greens to the next level.
“We don’t have an online presence for instance, but we pride ourselves on our customer service and working directly with the people.”
Mr Green described what he would look like in prospective new owners: “It will be somebody who has lived and worked in Leigh, and who knows a bit about the community and about us, that would be the dream.”
Mr Green added that he wanted the shop to retain its strong independent identity, and would not want the shop to be sold to a bigger chain.
He added: “Greens is staunchly independent, and we are lucky that with the support of the community we have been able to keep that standing.”
“Thank you to everyone,” he added.
