THE Rochford Liberal Democrats have emerged victorious in the latest local elections, despite failing to secure an overall majority.
In what is hailed as a “momentous” outcome in the Rochford district, they have gained an additional three seats, propelling them to become the largest political party on the council.
Contrastingly, the Conservatives saw a decline, mirrored in the national picture, with only three councillors elected and a total loss of five seats following the polling on Thursday, May 2nd.
This surge in Lib Dem representation has positioned them well above the Tories, now boasting 11 councillors and dominating as the primary party on the council.
However, Rochford Council remains hung, as the joint Independent, Liberal Democrat, and Green administration is expected to remain in power.
The council composition now stands at 11 Liberal Democrats, ten Conservatives, nine Independents, eight Residents’ Association members, and one Green councillor.
Notably, both the Liberal Democrats and Independents have made substantial gains in the parish and town elections as well.
Leader of the Lib Dem group, James Newport, reportedly commented: “We are very proud of what we have achieved and it was a successful night. Ultimately, we have to thank the residents who have seen the work we have done in recent years and have continued to support us. We are excited to move forward.
“It is early days, and we will be taking some time to catch our breath and celebrate and then we will have the conversations about the next administration.
“The result, in Rochford and across south Essex as Tories lose seats, is a clear reflection of the public mood felt across the country at the moment.”
