THE chairman of Leigh Town Council has been elected to serve a second term, despite a petition calling for his resignation.

Coun Bernard Arscott will lead the council after a vote at the annual town council meeting on Tuesday May 21.

This is an unprecedented move, as it is customary for Leigh Town Council Chair to stand down after a year in the role.

Tory town councillors Judith Suttling and Anne Robinson, abstained from the chairmanship vote.

James Preston, a local campaigner, unhappy about the  Town Council’s the Tory majority, said it was “disappointing there was no change of chair.”

Coun Arscott said: “We are hoping for a far more settled year than the previous year.

“We’re hoping we will be able to achieve a lot more than we did previously when we were dominated by particular events.

“Now those matters are virtually concluded we are hoping to see more improvements.”
