Leigh On Sea News: By David Burton-Sampson Labour Party

By David Burton-Sampson Labour Party

On Thursday 4th July you can choose. You can choose what sort of future you want to have. One of hope and stability, or more of the same.

Southend West and Leigh has had a Conservative MP for as long as any of us can remember. But do we feel better off?

We can all see the consequences of 14 years of Tory failure. Just check out the sewage crisis plaguing our estuary.

This government has allowed water companies to dump sewage into our waterways with no consequences. That will end with Labour. Our plan to hold water companies to account – fines and criminal sanctions are all part of a package to stop this mess.

Even our roads are fraying at the edges. Potholes are a nuisance and they’re avoidable. The Tories are too distracted fighting amongst themselves to bother having a plan to fix our roads. But Labour does. We want to fix one million potholes every year. The neglect to Britain’s road is a symptom of the way the Conservatives have neglected all of us.

Or if not our waterways – what about housing? Mortgages went through the roof following the unfunded and out-of-touch Liz Truss budget.

Labour wants to build more affordable homes – not just a few here and there but the largest increase to affordable housing for a generation. And with Rachel Reeves’ plan to stabilise our economy, we can make sure mortgage rates come down to manageable levels.

And here in Leigh, the Conservative Party are playing politics with Leigh Town Council with no accountability to local people. As your MP, I would do everything I can to end this nonsense and would call for a parliamentary review into the accountability of town councils right across the country.

Labour is offering a chance to do things differently – we have a plan to bring down your energy bills and reduce immigration. With GB Energy, a new, publicly-owned clean energy company we will harness Britain’s sun, wind and wave energy to bring down the cost of your heating and electricity and reduce our reliance on foreign dictators.

I’ve lived in Essex for 25 years and in that time I’ve realised we need a strong voice or else we’ll be forgotten. I’m not prepared to let Southend West and Leigh be forgotten. I’ve been a community campaigner for decades and I know how to get things done. I want to make sure this place – our home – is at the heart of the next Labour government’s thinking.

And local people are telling me every day on the doorstep that they’re crying out for change. Labour wants the same thing – our plans on getting the NHS back on its feet, hiring more teachers, is a plan to deliver for us.

I won’t take your vote for granted, and neither will Labour. If you put your trust in us, I can promise you we will deliver for you.
