Leigh On Sea News: By Tilly Hogrebe Green Party

By Tilly Hogrebe Green Party

As your Green Party Candidate for Southend West and Leigh, as well as a resident of Southend-on-Sea for over a decade, I am excited to share with you my vision for building a sustainable, vibrant and inclusive community.

For a fairer, healthier country: After 14 years of underfunding, our NHS is at breaking point. Healthcare workers are stretched thin, and patients at Southend Hospital are facing unacceptable wait times for urgent treatments.

I support the Green Party commitment to a fully public and fully funded NHS, which demonstrates our dedication to the health and well-being of every individual in our country.

For fairer, greener homes: Everyone deserves a safe, warm and affordable home. The current trend of for profit developments, which do not consider the needs of a community, are not fit for purpose.

I support the creation of good quality affordable housing in places where people live and work. Large developments must also include access to public services such as nurseries, schools, GP surgeries, as well as a functioning walking, cycling and public transport network. I am committed to protecting Green Belt land and to ensuring that everybody has easy access to a green space.

For clean rivers and coastlines: Southend has suffered, as have many other communities located near rivers and coastlines, from the pollution of the waterways from a not fit-for-purpose sewage system. Instead of funding necessary repairs and improvements, money is paid to shareholders.

I support the Green Party in bringing services back into public hand to stop the harm caused to our beautiful Estuary, as well as rivers and coastlines across the country.

For a fairer, greener deal for everyone: Most of us want to live in a country where everyone is treated with dignity. Yet, we see record numbers of children living in poverty and more and more people relying on food banks. Creating a fair and inclusive society is at the core of Green Party values, as well as my personal values. I commit wholeheartedly to standing up for the less privileged members of our communities, including supporting a compassionate welfare system and fair taxation.

At the same time, we are living in a time of climate crisis. Many of the solutions to this are the same as the solutions to tackle the cost of living crisis. Investing in a Green economy, well insulated homes and healthy communities will create a future that is both fairer and more liveable.

The recent local elections have proved that voting Green can make a difference, both in Southend and nationally. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my fellow residents across the City of Southend, who chose to vote Green and helped elect Southend’s second Green Councillor. We can make a difference on national level too! A strong Green vote will help hold the new government – which we can expect with some certainty to be Labour run – to account.

Therefore I urge you to vote Green on 4th July. For Real Hope and Real Change!
