THE death of one of the ‘sons of Leigh’ has been announced.
Mo Deal passed away on May 26 after a long illness.
He started work as an apprentice at Johnson Sons & Jago along with Colin and John Knapp in the 1950s.
The three of them started building boats on Victoria Wharf and owned the site for many years.
Mo Deal converted a boat into a small tug called the “Kestrel” and started doing towing work, he went on to own the ‘Leity F’ and then the ‘Eugenio’ a Dutch Tug where he did a lot of work for Wallingford ,when they were surveying the lower Estuary when the plans were being put forward for the Maplin airport and docks, as well as surveying for a nuclear power station at Orford Ness which eventually went to Sizewell.
Leigh resident Peter Wexham commented: “He was one of Leigh’s characters and I remember working with him on the ‘Eugenio’ doing the survey work.”
