Trees for Babies - A LEIGH councillor has called for a new tree to be planted for every baby born in the city.

A LEIGH councillor has called for a new tree to be planted for every baby born in the city.

Tory Coun Alan Dear of Belfairs ward, alongside Coun Dan Nelson of Southchurch Ward, are behind plans suggested at a recent full council meeting.

Their idea is to install a new sapling for every childbirth registered in Southend, with parents also being informed as to the location of their child’s tree.

It is though this initiative would also help improve the street scene, whilst establishing meaningful connections between the city and inhabitants.

The idea was also endorsed by Leigh’s Green Party councillor Richard Longstaff.

Coun Longstaff reportedly backed the plans, saying it was important to increase tree coverage in the City.

He commented: “I think that’s a brilliant idea. It will really make people feel connected to the city. It’s a wonderful idea.

“Personally, I’d say plant a tree for every child under 16 in Southend.

“We need to plant thousands of trees and we need to know the location of where we can plant trees and that’s the big hurdle.”

The move follows criticisms of the council for removing of certain trees.

Local campaign groups like Once Upon A Tree and STAG (Southend tree action group) have been set up by residents to help protect the City’s green canopy, and promote its importance.

Coun Longstaff urged action on planting: “We haven’t got time to keep messing around and pontificating about it.

“We just need to get trees in the ground.”
