LEIGH couple who bought a “mouldy” narrowboat on Facebook Marketplace and renovated it into their dream home have reported that it saves them at least £10,000-a-year on rent in London.
Nancy Kerina, originally from Leigh, and her partner, Dale Rankmore, found a 1970s narrowboat for £22,000 and have spent around £10,000 renovating it themselves.
Now, they travel London’s waterways on their boat and claim they could never go back to being “tied down” with rent and mortgages.
The couple met in 2020 while on a ski season, but the pandemic saw them back in the UK, living in Nancy’s family home in Leigh while they worked out their next steps.
Nancy reportedly explained: “We both had a similar mindset. We wanted to live in an abnormal way.
“We didn’t want to live with mortgages and get tied down.”
After Nancy’s step dad told them about the narrowboat community, she reportedly “got obsessed with it straight away.”
“It seemed perfect,” she added.
Unable to buy a house, the narrowboat seemed a cheaper way of doing things, and an opportunity for variety and adventure along the waterways.
Four years later, and with ‘The Pig Boat’ renovated, the couple haven’t looked back, and pay just £100 per month for a cruiser license, which mandates you move the boat along the canal every two weeks.
They also reportedly that they spend £150-a-month from November to March keeping their log burner going and spent £1,000 on solar panels to now get free electricity.
Endorsing the water-based life over the difficulty of paying rent in London, Nancy added: “London is totally different seeing it from the canal.
“The canals are really populated. It does feel safe. The bills are really low, it’s really handy. We don’t have massive bills to pay.”
