FELLING mature trees in Leigh. By Paul Fox, Woodfield Road Leigh.
Sir, With reference to your article about the proposed cutting down of the seven mature ash trees in Vernon road, I agree with Councillor Longstaff that Southend Council is too keen to cut down such trees.
This tree on the London Road, near Belfairs was cut down recently, because they said it had “die back” in some of its upper branches.
This could have been pruned out, and the tree would be there for another ten years. In that time the old tree stump that is 30 feet up the road could be replaced with a young tree, so keeping more trees in this road.
You can see by the photo that the tree was very healthy, and should never have been cut down.
