Horse Volunteer Initiative - ESSEX Police joined forces with a horse-riding club in Rochford for a community event.

ESSEX Police joined forces with a horse-riding club in Rochford for a community event.

The meeting with Ramblers Riding Club gave the police the opportunity to discuss the Essex Horse Volunteer Scheme with residents.

This volunteer’s initiative is designed to encourage horse riders to be the force’s extra “eyes and ears” around the countryside, and to report any suspicious behaviour to the police.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We have been supporting partners at the Ramblers Riding club.
“This was a fantastic opportunity to engage with our community, listen to views, plus discuss the ‘Essex Horse Rider Volunteer Scheme’.
“Thank you for inviting us along.

Essex Police explain the scheme: “Essex Police has the task of policing often-quieter locations as well as busy urban areas.

“Horse riders have the unique ability to see over hedges and go where the usual patrol cars cannot.

“As well as narrow country lanes, horse riders have access to the countryside via bridleways, byways and private land with permission of the landowners.

“Examples of help with these crimes could be spotting signs of unlawful digging or damage at a historic site (including isolated churches), a stolen agricultural machine hidden up in woodland, or even signs of wildlife crime such as hare coursing in progress.

“If you are an equestrian, we are always looking to welcome new members to the scheme.”
