Many young people in the UK are affected by the death of a parent, sibling or other adults who have a significant impact on their lives. Often, they will feel very alone and face many challenges as they manage the impact of the death.

Havens Hospices in Southend has extensive experience supporting children and teens who are bereaved or facing the loss of a loved one, which is why they have designed courses for professionals in education, health and social care or those working or volunteering with young people in other industries.

This October, the charity is offering two unique courses: a two-day Children & Grief course and a one-day Teens & Grief course.

These sessions are designed to help professionals develop the necessary skills and knowledge to support and care for young people who are grieving and there are only a limited number of places available.

The Children & Grief course is a supportive, interactive, and creative course that explores ways of working with pre and post-bereaved children up to the age of 11.

Through arts and crafts activities, the course aims to boost confidence when working with children and to facilitate open conversations. It also examines the ages and stages of development and grief and hears from children about their experiences and what they found helpful.

When a teen experiences the death of a loved one, they are at an age where they are already dealing with the transition from childhood to adulthood and all the complexities it brings.

The Teens & Grief course gives an insight into how teenagers aged 11-18 respond to bereavement and loss. It also explores some of the common misconceptions about teens and grief and examines ways of responding to and working with pre and post-bereaved young people. There will also be a guest speaker to talk about their experience.

Both courses are delivered through a mix of presentations, group discussions and creative activities to support learning.

Jane Fieldson, Children & Young Person’s Counselling Service Lead at Havens Hospices and one of the course facilitators, said: “Our courses are designed to equip professionals with the skills and confidence needed to support grieving children and teens.

“Many young people feel isolated and overwhelmed when grieving. Professionals can make a significant difference in their lives by understanding the unique challenges these young people face and learning effective ways to support them.”

Havens Hospices provides specialist care and support across Essex for people of all ages living with incurable conditions and their families so they can get the most from life and continue to make every day count with the time they have together.

Both courses are taking place at Little Havens in Thundersley. The Teen & Grief course takes place on 18th October and costs £95. The Children & Grief course runs on Thursday October 31 and Friday November 1, costing £195.
