Chief Inspector’s Update

 Hello Leigh On Sea News Readers, my name is Chief Inspector Dave Browning and I am Southend’s new District Commander. I have taken over the role from Chief Inspector Jo Collins, who has now retired. Jo worked hard in this role and I wish her well in her retirement.

 Firstly a little bit about me. I have 27 years Policing experience, nearly all of it in Southend! I come from a background in Crime and Public Protection where I have worked in a detective-based role for the past 14 years overseeing investigations into some of the most serious crimes committed in South Essex.

 Before going into the detective world I spent 13 years in uniform roles, all of which were spent in Southend, so I have a good mix of experience to bring to the role as well as a good working knowledge of Southend and I am thrilled to be back here as your District Commander.

 In this role I am now responsible for local and community policing – the officers that respond to 999 calls. It is these teams that solve and prevent crime across Southend.

 Southend is a diverse district and as one of the most popular seaside destinations in the country, Southend experiences high numbers of day trippers and holidaymakers, these bring their own challenges which Officers and staff work hard to manage and deal with alongside our partners.

 Our Police officers like nothing more than talking to the public. Let the officers know if you have any concerns, so we can act on them. The more we know about what’s happening, the more we can do to help.

 There is some fantastic work already being carried out by my teams alongside some strong partnerships and we are solving more crime for you than last year.

 I have three things I want to focus on and improve for you with our partners. Firstly, keeping you better informed of the great work we do to keep the City safe. Second, I will also want us to solve even more crime and thirdly to continue to reduce violent crime with our partners through a targeted approach.

 The Southend Police and Partners Open Day once again proved popular as families flocked to the police station to get a look behind the scenes and meet their local officers.

Now in its second year, the event featured tours of Southend’s custody suite, public order demonstrations and lots of interactive fun with our crime scene investigators, Marine Unit, Rural Engagement Team and more.

 Alongside our officers were teams from the East of England Ambulance Service, HM Coastguard, Essex County Fire and Rescue, the RNLI, the Safer Essex Roads Partnership, St John Ambulance, the drug and alcohol charity Open Road and the council’s community safety team. It was a great day and lovely to meet some of you from the local Community.
