Now parliament has resumed, it’s back to business in the House of Commons with a whirlwind of meetings and debates. This month we will be marking Labour’s and my first 100 days in office.

There’s a lot to be proud of, including the Water Special Measures Bill, which penalises bosses who pollute British waters; an important move for our Southend and Leigh Community. We have also kickstarted Labour’s ten-year plan for the NHS, created Great British Energy to bring your fuel bills down and given rights to renters.

I’m pleased to say that in the first 100 since I had the privilege of being elected, I have met with more than 100 organisations to hear their concerns and attended hundreds of events.

I have spoken several times in parliament, delivered speeches in the Westminster Hall, met with Secretaries of State and asked questions in the House, as your voice in Westminster. But most importantly of all, we have answered more than one thousand inquiries from you and resolved three quarters of them. That is what we’re here for so please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Before parliament resumed, I was busy in the constituency getting to meet more of you and hear what you have to say.

I was delighted to join members of Southend Mosque for “Visit my Mosque Day”. The community opened their place of worship to the wider community to teach people more about the Islamic faith and demystify the religion. We discussed dispelling myths about Muslim life while enjoying a feast of delicious food!

The growing success story of Southend Airport was the strong message I got when I was given a tour around, including walking around the terrifying gantry at the top of the control tower!

Meeting Director, Richard Hoskins and CEO Marc Taylor, I heard how London Southend has achieved several significant milestones recently, including year-round flying, a significant increase in destinations and the successful transition of owners to Carlyle and Cyrus Capital Partners earlier this year.

I welcomed the news that 87% of people working there are from Southend postcodes and spoke to the leadership team about being a good neighbour to residents living nearby.

I congratulated the Friends of Leigh Library Gardens on their green fingers, while being shown around the beautiful plot there. It is a real testament to their volunteering, and I commend them for their efforts in creating a space, which so many people can enjoy.

It was also great to see some of the wonderful wildlife like the badger sets, unfortunately a glimpse of the badgers themselves eluded us. Well done all of you and thanks.

On a visit to the Estuary Housing Association’s supported units at Grahame House I met with staff, including CEO Ian Martin. We discussed the plans of the new government for the social and affordable housing sector and supported housing. I really enjoyed meeting the many lovely residents there and even received my first Christmas card!

Thoughts of Christmas are little way off yet, there’s a lot of work to be done between now and then. I want to reassure you that in the next 100 days, 100 weeks and beyond I will be striving to do even more to help improve your lives as I aim to make Southend West and Leigh a happier, healthier and fairer place to live.
