POLICE officers conducted patrols along Westcliff seafront in their mission to keep roads in Southend safe as part of “Vision Zero Enforcement”.
A spokesperson for Essex Police Southend District explained: “Our officers worked with partners as part of “Vis ion Zero” patrols to Roads Policing Unit officers, road safety staff from Southend City Council and Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) joined forces to stop and speak to drivers, highlighting road safety issues, educating them on aspects of the law and how to keep themselves safe as part of the policing activities.”
Installed at Western Esplanade, officers stopped 26 vehicles.
Police reported people who were not wearing seatbelts, and those who had defective lights.
A spokesperson said: “Twenty-six vehicles were stopped at Western Esplanade.
“Just as it was getting dark, two vehicles were stopped for defective lights. In total 12 people were reported for not wearing seatbelts and four for mobile phone use.
“But the last word goes to the passenger who wasn’t wearing his seat belt – because he was sorting out a cup of tea!
“It’s not an excuse.”
Earlier in the day, Vision Zero enforcement was sited at Nestuda Way where 24 vehicles were stopped for a variety of offences.
A spokesperson said: “One driver removed his tinted window cover as it proved illegal – not allowing the correct level of light through the windscreen and a stolen vehicle was stopped (and ultimately arrested) because the driver was using a mobile phone!”
