AN heroic woman who sprang into action to help rescue three children trapped on the Chalkwell mudflats has been awarded a gold “hero award” at the Southend Citizen of the Year ceremony.

Charli Best, 35, rescued a young girl and boy by running out to help them on the mudflats, where they were threatened by the incoming tide.

The recuse led to injuries for Charli, leaving her bare feet “shredded”.

She said: “I am absolutely honoured and grateful to win the Citizen of Southend Hero Award.”

Explaining her actions on the day back in the summer, she said: “I just did whatever anyone would do (I hope) in that situation!”

Charli, who received her award from The Mayor of Southend, added: “I will be donating £500 to charity from the award and trust.

“I’m looking for local charities that support children who have fled domestic abuse or are homeless.”

She commented: “I met some inspiring people at the ceremony. People do do good things.”

The award is judged by a panel of local people, including Adventure Island boss Sir Philip Miller.
