THE Revd. Canon Julie Fleming, vicar of St. Saviour’s Church in Westcliff, has introduced a new initiative as a result of local concerns about rising levels of violence and conflict, both in the city of Southend, and worldwide.
A tree in the grounds of the church, in Kings Road, Westcliff, has been dedicated as a Peace Tree, where members of the local community can tie a white ribbon, and if they wish, offer up a prayer for peace.
Each Sunday, at 6.00 pm, Revd. Julie leads a short vigil at the tree, when anyone with concerns about local issues or foreign conflicts can attend to join in the prayers for peace.
A stock of white ribbons is permanently available on site for anyone to use. The Peace Tree is illuminated a night, and has become a stand-out feature of the neighbourhood.
“We welcome any visitors who would like to tie a ribbon on the tree to join in with our commitment towards praying for peace in the world,” says Revd. Julie.
Visitors to the St. Saviour’s Christmas Bazaar, to be held on Saturday the 30th of November, will be invited to tie ribbons on the Peace Tree.
