Former Boots Plan

 THE former Boots pharmacy on Leigh’s Broadway could be transformed into a coffee shop under fresh propels submitted to Southend City Council.

 The well-known chemist branch closed its doors for good in March 2024.

 A planning application has now been submitted to Southend’s planning committee, requesting permission to create a coffee shop on the propertie’s ground floor, whilst transforming the top floor into a flat. 

 If approved, the business would join many other coffee shops open in the immediate surroundings of the Broadway, including Stop The World, Corner Club, Squeeze, North, and Brunch and Coffee.

 Coun Wexham of Elms Ward said that he was concerned about this general shift to replacing businesses with coffee shops and places to eat.

 He commented: “We are still losing too many shops each year into coffee bars or wine bars, the Banks have gone and at this rate of loss the area as a shopping area will disappear.

 “The owners of these properties are happy to change the use as they can generate more money from wine bars or coffee shops than they can from ordinary shop leases.”
