DAVID Burton-Sampson, MP for Leigh and Southend West, met with the Pensions Minister to celebrate the increase for pensioners of up to £470 extra in their pockets.
He discussed with Torsten Bell how welcome the 4.1% increase in the state Pension will be in helping people with the cost of living.
Mr Burton-Sampson said: “More than 20,000 pensioners in Southend West and Leigh will benefit from seeing their pension rise by up to £470 a year from this week.
“The Labour government is committed to the pensions triple lock, which will deliver around £1,900 for pensioners over the course of this parliament, at a cost of £30bn.
“This Labour Government is committed to delivering for our pensioners – ensuring their financial stability through the triple lock, fixing our NHS and public services, and targeting support towards those who need it most, with more than 2,000 people receiving pension credit in my constituency.”
The pensions triple lock guarantees that the state pension goes up each year by the highest of 2.5%, inflation, or earnings growth, for the whole of the parliament. Nearly fifty thousand extra pensioners are receiving Pension Credit following the government’s campaign to boost uptake, which has seen an increase of 81%.
Other government support includes the £150 Warm Home Discount for low-income households, extending the Household Support Fund with £742 million, to ensure local authorities can support pensioners and families that are struggling with the cost of living.
