THE flower show season opened with a burst of colour at the Leigh Horticultural Society’s record-breaking Spring Show.
A spokesperson explained: “The show benches heaved with narcissus, flowering shrubs and floral arrangements: a magnificent introduction to the society’s centenary year.
“Of course, the daffodils stole the show with a vast range of varieties displayed. However, it was evident that members’ gardens were flourishing with camellias, tulips and pansies.
“Hedgehog cakes adorned the children’s section of the show benches in memory of former Society Secretary Charles Ablethorpe.
“Bakers had worked hard to compete with coffee cakes, fruit tarts and tray bakes, marmalade and jam. At the opposite end of the hall, photographers had captured scenes of gardens, shadows and of Leigh.
“Barbara Santarelli wowed us all with her beautifully embroidered cushion, and Linda Catling’s knitted March hare was a delight.”
Among the prize winners, were Linda Kemp and Kevin Durrant, while Nick Pugh was awarded a Daffodil Society diploma and medal for his trumpet daffodils.
The president’s award went to Julia Tetley.
