Two LFR Arrests - A WOMAN wanted by police and a man suspected of shoplifting were both arrested in Southend thank to our Live Facial Recognition (LFR) cameras.

A WOMAN wanted by police and a man suspected of shoplifting were both arrested in Southend thank to our Live Facial Recognition (LFR) cameras.

The cameras – operated by specialists in our Operation Policing Command – were used by our Southend Neighbourhood Policing Team to locate known wanted suspects in Southend town centre on Saturday 3 May.

The technology utilises CCTV camera feeds to LFR software to scan faces against a predetermined database or ‘watch list’ of people of interest.

The scanning of an image takes less than a second, and the data and image of those not on the watchlist is automatically and immediately deleted and not stored.

The 40-year-old man from Rochford was released on bail until 5 June.

Gemma Hill, 41, of no fixed address, has now been charged with possession with intent to supply a Class A drug and has been remanded in custody to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 6 May.

Chief Inspector Jennifer Bliss, of our Operational Policing Command, said: “Cutting edge technology is playing an important role in protecting people, responding to and investigating crimes, and getting justice for victims.

“Criminals cannot think they can walk around our communities without being caught and these arrests show our regular LFR deployments are working to catch those wanted for offences.

“We’re looking for specific people wanted for serious offences and to enforce orders – when there is a positive match, appropriate action will be taken by officers on the ground to confirm ID and then assess what the next action is to be taken.

“We work hard to find the most effective ways of keeping people safe in Essex, so if you want to learn more about these cameras when you see them, speak to our officers and they’ll be happy to show you how they work.”
