DAVID Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend and Leigh, was honoured to cut the ribbon for the opening of the new history corridor in Eastwood Primary School.
He was invited to visit the school when the children came to parliament to ask him questions about being an MP.
Mr Burton-Sampson said he was delighted to reciprocate and cut the red ribbon on the special presentation area. He said: “This is an incredible display, well done to everyone involved, the artwork is fantastic.”
The school is keen to make its public areas information zones with a twist. On the newly opened history corridor children can try on the Roman helmets for size or showcase axes and flints they have made themselves while a time-line delivers curriculum material.
“This is a great example of making learning fun”, said Mr Burton-Sampson. “The teaching staff here have made a huge effort to educate and entertain and that is the way to engage pupils.”
The MP spoke to a class of keen seven- and- eight- year-olds and was also given a tour of Hagrid’s hut in the school grounds, a reconstruction of the Harry Potter story character’s home, used as a recreational and learning space by children in the school.
“I am so impressed by everything I have seen here”, said the MP. “I wish Eastwood Primary School and Nursery every success in the future. It was a pleasure to see everyone here today and to speak to so many of the children.”
