A WESTCLIFF-based artist has been selected for the London Art Biennale 2025, a large art annual art event in its seventh year.

Contemporary artist Helle Johansen-Baker will be exhibiting a painting for the prestigious show, which will be held Chelsea Old Town Hall this summer.

Ms Johansen-Baker, who is a self-taught artist, has a studio in Southend’s Grainger Road.

For the Biennale, she will be exhibiting ‘A chair for the guest’, a large work on canvas painted with acrylics, exploring the tension between highly saturated and desaturated colours to create a dynamic arrangement.

She explains: “my work is driven by a fascination with how colours interact, and seeks to evoke emotion and movement through subtle layering techniques that add depth and texture to each piece.”

Ms Johansen-Baker works with artists in Leigh, and is part of a local collective in Leigh’s @70thebroadway.

She has also exhibited a few times with Roy’s Art Fair in London and exhibited at Linden Hall Studios Winter Group Show in Deal, Kent.

Ms Johansen-Baker described being completely surprised on being selected for the exhibition.

She added: “I applied for this event back in January and had forgotten all about it, until they sent me an email and congratulated me on my work!

“I didn’t know just how prestigious this event is, so I’m feeling a little nervous right now.”

The Biennale running from 16 to 20 July this year Biennale celebrates its VII edition.

Organised in partnership with Gagliardi Gallery, the exhibition will feature 350 creative talents from 60 nations.
