Trek For Charity - A LEIGH mother and son are preparing for a monumental challenge as they head to the Isle of Skye to complete a 100km trek

A LEIGH mother and son are preparing for a monumental challenge as they head to the Isle of Skye to complete a 100km trek in support of the UK’s only breast cancer awareness charity specifically targeting young people aged 18 to 24.

Donna Simonelli, 48, and her son Sonny Simonelli, 25, will trek across the Scottish island over five days as part of the CoppaFeel! Isle of Skye Challenge.

Each trekker must raise £2,500 to take part, with every pound supporting the charity’s mission to end late detection of breast cancer through education and empowerment.

For Ms Simonelli, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age, the cause is deeply personal.

She said: “For me personally, having had breast cancer at a young age, I feel the work of this charity is incredibly important, so as well as trying to raise as much money as possible, I am also trying to raise CoppaFeel! awareness and end breast cancer misconceptions.”

The Isle of Skye was a deliberate and meaningful choice for the duo, too.

Ms Simonelli added: “I chose Isle of Skye as my son and I have trekked and climbed mountains in Wales and the Lake District and we were hoping to go to Scotland next.

“Then I saw the publicity for the CoppaFeel! Challenge in Isle of Skye so it seemed destiny.”

The Simonellis are no strangers to tough terrain. Just a few weeks ago, they completed a demanding CoppaFeel! 1/5 marathon trek in the South Downs, giving them a taste of what lies ahead.

Now, they’re turning their sights north for what promises to be both a physical and emotional journey.
