A NEW School Crossing Patrol officially started work on Monday 30 June outside Edward Francis Primary School on Hockley Road in Rayleigh.
This follows a successful campaign led by local councillors and residents after a horrific accident last autumn.
Although the County Council approved the appointment of a ‘lollipop’ crossing person quite quickly after the accident, the role had been vacant for several months, raising road safety concerns from parents, the school, and local campaigners. Persistent efforts by Coun James Newport (County Councillor for Rayleigh North) and Coun Mike Sutton, supported by Essex County Council’s School Crossing Patrol Service, have now resulted in a successful appointment.
The selected candidate has completed all necessary vetting and began duties at the end of last month.
Coun Sutton, who supported the campaign from the outset, said: “This is a big win for the community.
“We’ve been pushing hard for this appointment because the safety of children crossing the busy Hockley Road is non-negotiable. I want to thank the residents who backed the campaign and Essex County Council for acting on our concerns.
“We’re delighted to welcome the new patrol and restore confidence for families walking to and from school.”
The new patrol will be stationed near Edward Francis Primary School and will also serve children at the nearby FitzWimarc School. It is expected to be a visible and reassuring presence for children and parents during the busy school run.
